alors que tout est si noir dans l'âme

quand on est allongé et qu'on acquiesce
— étourdiment peut-être — à tous les parfums de la terre
à la musique mystérieuse de la terre
— pas seulement dans les arbres avec le vent
mais où elle est aussi odeurs, choses non dites à jamais ?

Je suis lasse d'entendre pleurer sur la vie ; elle devrait franchement avoir cessé de nous étonner. J'éprouve la même impatience que me donnent les dévots : « Le monde, le monde... » Et il faut qu'elle nous ait donné une certaine idée de la félicité, cette vie, pour que nous ayons tant de peine à ne pas être heureux, pour que la chose nous soit si fort désagréable.
Je vois la vie sans raison, sans espoir, sans merci, et je l'aime parce qu'elle est en somme tout ce que nous avons. Et puis, elle dure si peu !
Les suicidés sont des gens bien pressés d'arriver.
Quant à l'impassibilité et l'amour du néant, stoïcisme, bouddhisme, philosophie de la peur ! La mort ne vaut pas d'être une obsession. Elle est à sa place au bout de la vie ; ne l'en dérangeons pas.
Illusion pour illusion, j'aime mieux l'illusion brillante, et surtout l'illusion passionnée.
Quant à la paix ; elle est une joie que doivent imaginer fort mal, je l'espère pour eux, ceux qui l'appellent. Toujours, la suppression de la souffrance ; les humains ne vont pas au delà !

Est-ce que je trouverai jamais définitif ce que j'ai écrit ? L'idée que c'est cela et pas autre chose, l'idée que c'est moi, qu'on me jugera là-dessus. Dans les millions de nuances qui peuvent altérer ma pensée, dans les millions de formes qui peuvent la métamorphoser, celle que voilà est-elle bonne et surtout la plus moi ? Si mon affreuse manie de la relativité, ma perception extraordinaire des autres possibles, me poursuit encore dans le style, comme elle le fait dans la vie, je m'achemine à un travail démesuré, j'en meurs déjà de paresse... Mais je suis plus intelligente, plus volontaire, plus douée que les trois quarts de nos écrivains, j'ai tout ce qui ne s'acquiert pas, et un peu de ce qui s'acquiert, ne serait-ce que l'érudition.. Mais il me faut de l'argent, il me faut un milieu et l'heure actuelle n'est bonne qu'à être sacrifiée.

Naïf de croire que, parce que vous avez échelonné les étapes de telle manière, celle-ci est plus avancée que celle-là, de croire les autres en retard sur vous, de dire « vous en viendrez là », de se croire soi-même plus avancé à une heure qu'à une autre. Nous ne croyons plus au progrès pour l'humanité et nous y croyons pour l'individu !
